It is based on collaboration within the common knowledge environment and enables knowledge sharing between these disciplines.

Higher productivity can be achieved due to substantial pre-planning during the design and construction phases, which provides comprehensive information during the handover phase.

BIM has introduced some new principles on how to design, build and manage assets to best realize the potential benefits offered by this new way of working.
Ipeople, process and technology
BIM is not just a technology; It is a new way of using technology to design, build and manage assets. Likewise, perhaps more fundamental than technology, is the set of processes (as outlined in the ISO 19650 and BS / PAS 1192 Standards series) that must be followed along with the change in working practices at the operations level. The need for a common approach in the supply chain is a prime example.
Joint participation
One of the key parameters of how successfully a BIM project is delivered is the degree to which the supply chain works collaboratively to meet the project/asset needs. This means open working and sharing knowledge and experience with supply chain members in a way that encourages joint problem solving and coordination.
Don't start by thinking about the end of the job
A major issue that BIM is addressing is hasty decisions taken late in the day, backed up by insufficient and incorrect information. Decisions taken considering the end of the work will be more accurate. For example; complete all basic design work and coordination prior to the start of construction, and ensure that design decisions are made that take into account all requirements regarding operational performance and use of the asset (BS 8536).
digital asset
It is increasingly recognized that the value of the asset is not only attributed to its physical presence, but also to its "digital twin". That is, the sum of all data/information that defines the graphical and non-graphical features and is required by the physical entity. Knowing that this digital asset accurately represents the physical asset ; design, construction and operating decisions can be optimized.
Holistic approach to security
Once what needs to be protected and the associated threats and consequences have been identified, a holistic approach that encompasses people, processes, technological security, and physical security must be adopted to secure a sensitively constructed asset and sensitive information.
